There might be a reason why this tradition has started in the Indian history. There are some people who believe that girl’s parents have started this tradition with their statements such as, “Hey, wait. I have a daughter who will be wife for your entire life. Please take a good care for her. I will pay you with a dowry”.

But also there are many negative opinions about this quote because not a single parent wants her daughter to be degraded. But the tradition has taken part of the marriages. The groom’s parents are usually coming with this statement: “You have a daughter and should pay us if you want your daughter to be daughter-in-law in our house. Otherwise, we will find someone who can pay a lot more than you”.

Dowry in India

Most parents in India thinks that love is dowry, and love can be just managed if her parents are giving money for her marriage. But tradition is the most important part for Indian people. There are many people who are not considering the dowry like something that should be changed. They are saying, “This is just a part of the Indian marriage – this is our tradition and we are not willing to change our religious culture”. Marriage in this country is steeped in deep – routed cultural beliefs and traditions.

When the parents of the girl were giving cash or other kinds of gift, they were sure that their kid will lead a happy married life. Love is a rarely known term in India in arranged marriages. Parents don’t give their children the right to choose the right partner. Their cultural beliefs are hard to be overcome.

There are little cases when men are not taking the dowry from the bride and their marriage comes from love. When this situation is happening, then the groom’s parents are accusing the bride for the money loss in their family and often this bride is not accepted from his parents. She is not playing any big role in the house and often she is insulted.

When one family has daughters, then there are trying to earn as much money as they can because in this way they will find richer man. Their parents are often forgetting about their existence. They are just focusing on the daughter’s dowry. Daughters are not having life as they deserve.

Men who have made good carriers can make their own choices. They are not believing that love before the marriage can keep them together. For them, love is provided in marriage. Also men who are having sisters are working to help their parents in the daughter’s dowry. If they are married, then their wives are also keeping dowry for the husband’s sister. Indian women are taught that when they are in marriage, they should do everything which they are asked for. It is their responsibility to do the everyday activities.

Also in India divorce is not accepted or it is found just in few cases. Dowry is the reason why Indian women cannot divorce from their rude husbands. The woman’s parents have saved through all their lives for the dowry. If their daughter asks for divorce, then she is not respecting them and also has not good morals. Indian people are thinking that with paying dowry, they are making the bride independent in the marriage.

When some educated person in India is against this kind of marriage, then he or she is criticized from society. This is a good sign that people in India are also thinking of their education which can be a reason for riding off this tradition. But this is just a tiny light in the endless tunnel. This is one kind of business which should be abolished because it is cruel tradition (which should not be called tradition because the tradition is helping to people and is not making them to suffer) in uncivilized morals. Women should raise their voices against this type of marriage. They should be strong and not to be afraid of their parents. It is very sad when educated people in India are also supporting this type of marriage. They should be the light in the dark tunnel for others.
